Background

Cullum Detuners is a world leading engineering company, providing advanced engineered solutions to the Aerospace, Energy, Marine and Nuclear sectors.

The Derbyshire-based company secured a £7 million contract to design and build a unique engine test facility for the propulsion units for the Royal Navy’s six Type 45 destroyers. The 700m2 marine gas turbine test facility located in Bristol will be used for analysis and maintenance on the ships’ Rolls-Royce WR21 propulsion units and called on Quartzelec’s Rugby business for their assistance and expertise.

The Project

Quartzelec were awarded the full contract to design, supply, install and commission all electrical aspects associated with the WR-21 test facility, components of which included

  • Supply of step-up power transformer (25 MVA, 4.16:11kV), MV switchgear and transfer panel
  • Installation of power transformer, MV switchgear and transfer panel, MV, LV and control cabling (by Quartzelec’s Wrexham business)
  • Commissioning of facility

The supply and installation phase of the project was successfully completed at the end of June, with pre-commissioning checks passed in advance of final commissioning August 2014.
